It's been a minute since I last talked about books, and with the arrival of my latest (But Have You Read the Book: Romance Edition, buy it now), it seemed appropriate to talk about publicity. It's that thing wherein we're told to pay thousands of dollars to have someone else hype us to other sites. I've put out three books so far and have yet to actually be able to afford a publicist.
But, that being said, I've been fortunate to do publicity for my books in my own way and it's been successful, I think. Hell, I'm still doing publicity for Popcorn Disabilities – did an awesome event at the Academy Museum this weekend – and while I have contemplated hiring a publicist for Welcome, Boils and Ghouls, that book could very well sell itself considering the subject material. It's a fluid situation and it shouldn't be determined by how much money you have.
So, I wanted to share some handy tips and tricks to the other authors out there who, like me, don't get the big advance dollars to publicize their works.
