Culture Journalists Are Reentering Their Blog Era But Is Second Time a Charm?

“Journalism is Fucked and We’re All Doomed” is my ongoing column looking at issues affecting entertainment journalism writers. It’s an offshoot of my series The Trade, an examination and exploration of topics in the entertainment industry. If you want to read the full story consider becoming a paid subscriber. Why is it important to get a paid subscription? Not only do you get access to the awesomeness below, but you’ll be able to read every paid post including our monthly watch diaries, disability articles, and more. I also cross post these over at The Film Maven Patreon where you can subscribe, at the same price, without supporting Substack itself. Subscribe and show your support for independent journalism.

Read more about the history of disability in film by pre-ordering my upcoming book, Popcorn Disabilities: The Highs and Lows of Disabled Representation in the Movies. I not only expand on what you’re reading here, but examine the stereotypes, tropes, and the good, bad (and really ugly) of disabled movies. Preorder the book by clicking this link! If you preorder and show proof of purchase I’ll give you a free paid subscription to The Film Maven for 1 year!

Last month forever Senior Culture Reporter for HuffPost, Candice Frederick posted on BlueSky that with news room almost exclusively made up of white journalists, that Black and Brown journalists were moving into their “blog era.” It’s something that journalists, BIPOC and femme-centric journos, have been noticing for the last year, as newsrooms decide DEI is dead and return to the bad old days of white/cis/het/male/abled newsrooms. And it seems like a journalist is being laid off and starting a Substack every other day.
